When it relates to sales tax, the NOMAD states refer to the five American states without a statewide sales tax: New Hampshire, Oregon, Montana, Alaska, and Delaware. Oregon: There is still no state-wide sales tax in the state, but cities are allowed to impose their own sales taxes in certain situations. But what does it mean?
The NOMAD states of New Hampshire, Oregon, Montana, Alaska and Delaware have no statewide sales tax – but online sellers aren’t off the hook in Alaska, where localities continue to band together to create a web of sales taxes that average out to slightly less than 2%. Among the first states to legalize marijuana some seven years ago, Washington collected $614 million in marijuana tax revenue last year. And Colorado raked in $362 million in marijuana taxes in 2020, a 30% jump from 2019.
Additional complexities: The five NOMAD states – New Hampshire, Oregon, Montana, Alaska and Delaware – do not have a statewide sales tax. Thresholds vary widely among states, and some are easing off thresholds. But economic nexus did not and does not override the physical nexus requirement.
There are five remaining states with no state level sales tax: New Hampshire, Oregon, Montana, Alaska and Delaware – often referred to as the NOMAD states. Oregon doesn’t have a sales tax but like some other states, it does have high rates of tax on income and property. Vermont was the last to due so in 1969.
Of course, there’s no statewide sales tax in the NOMAD states of New Hampshire, Oregon, Montana, Alaska and Delaware, so at least they’re simple to figure out no matter what you sell. In the clear?
